The Course: How does feeding, a process so integral to a child's health and well-being, go awry? The focus of this 2 day course is on a transdisciplinary (TR-eat) model integrating oral motor therapy techniques and behavioral management for the treatment of complex feeding problems. TR-eat is a transdisciplinary effective assessment and treatment method. The course will cover innovative strategies, using video case examples, to address oral aversion, food refusal, poor transition onto solid foods, texture grading, learning to chew, self feeding as well as feeding difficulties related to autism and picky eaters. It is relevant for infants and children through school age. This course is packed with practical solutions and hands on techniques that will empower you with new treatment ideas for your most complex patients. These interventions are systematic and evidence based with research supporting outcomes. This course is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience. Utilize diagnostic and innovative intervention strategies to address feeding problems across developmental stages. 3. Use oral motor facilitation techniques simultaneously administered with behavioral strategies. 4. Learn texture grading techniques and apply them to the process of making pureed foods for children learning how to chew. 5. Determine treatment interventions for picky eaters, including those with autism, utilizing behavioral interventions. 6. Enhance problem-solving skills through careful analysis to determine the most effective interventions to maximize outcomes. Course Schedule Day One - Thursday June 10th, 2010 8:00-8:30 - Registration and continental breakfast.8:30-10:00 – Review of feeding development birth-24 months (video examples); identification of common etiologies related to feeding problems and challenges; feeding difficulties for the beginning eater – introduction to evaluation/treatment with video examples 10:00-10:15 – Morning refreshment break 10:15 – 12:15 – Cont. of evaluation/treatment intervention for the beginning eater with video case studies (oral-motor interventions, alternatives to bottle feeding, spoon feeding and placement) 12:15-1:15 – Lunch (on your own) 1:15 – 2:30 - Practice spoon placement techniques, squeeze bottle and utilizing smooth pureed table foods in treatment across a variety of ages 2:30-2:45 – Afternoon refreshement break 2:45-4:30 – Introduction & application of behavioral principles, clinical problem solving; video case examples, discussion and questions focusing on behavioral interventions Day Two - Friday June 11th, 2010 8:00-8:30 - Continental breakfast 8:30-9:30 – Cont. application of behavioral principles, video case study 9:30-10:30 – Feeding problems and interventions for the advanced eater (positioning, texture grading – preparation of texture grading pureed/chopped table foods) video case studies 10:30-10:45 – Morning refreshment break 10:45-12:00 – Cont. of interventions for the advanced eater (chewing skills, self feeding, cup drinking, targeting dawdling and packing) video case studies 12:00-1:00 – Lunch (on your own) 1:00-2:30 - Treating feeding difficulties in children with autism, video examples of problems and interventions 2:30-2:45 – Afternoon refreshment break 2:45- 4:30 - Picky eaters (food fading, systematic desensitization, structured mealtimes, reward programs), video case examples, discussion and questions Instructors: Elizabeth Page Clawson, MS, PhD, LCP, HSPP and Carol Elliott, OTR/L
Elizabeth Page Clawson, MS, PhD, LCP, HSPP is a Clinical Child Psychologist for the Pediatric Feeding Program at St. Mary’s Center for Children in Evansville, Indiana. Dr.Clawson received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completedher internship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute/JohnsHopkins University School of Medicine. She previously served for 10 years as the Behavioral Director for a feeding program in Virginia. She has multiple research publications and presentations in the area of pediatrics.
Carol Elliott, OTR/L is a senior clinician for Children’s Feeding Program at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond, VA. She received her degree at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA. She has worked in the area of pediatric Occupational Therapy for 20 years and has specialized in treating children with feeding disorders for 13 years. She has multiple research publications and presentations in the area of pediatric feeding disorders.
